Supporting and taking part in community events is important.
I have a long history of giving my time to a wide range of community events including co-ordinating volunteers for the London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT) at the start of my career in the 1990s. In am also a keen supporter of my local community. More recently, I helped staff shops for Overgate Hospice, volunteered with the Fiesta Whitley Bay and I am helping out with the Cullercoats Festival. I also mentor organisers in the areas of event production and fundraising.
I was a Trustee at Fabrica Gallery (UK) for a number of years and have been a board member for the Hebden Bridge Film Festival. I have been invited to take part in the selection process for funding and awards for organisations including the Epic Awards for Voluntary Arts (now Creative Lives) and the Arts & Humanities Research Council.
At present, I am primarily giving time to the Grand Northern Ukulele Festival. That event was awarded a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (the MBE for community groups). The inclusion of a wide range of voices normally not heard (or seen) is central to each of the organisations with whom I work and is one of the many reasons I give each my time.
